Harold Pinter, my favorite author, died yesterday. I was a huge Pinter nerd in college and wrote my senior thesis on him. A few months after graduating I moved to New York and was thrilled to discover Lincoln Center was holding a Harold Pinter Festival. I didn’t have much money, so I bought a ticket to see The Homecoming ($100!) and then used the ticket stub to sneak into 6 more Pinter plays throughout the week. At the end of the festival there was a talk with Pinter, and I was lucky enough to get to ask him a question. I was nervous and stammering, but he was super nice and gave me exactly the answer I hoped he would. (No, an actor should not spend time making up his own backstory while playing one of his characters.) If you’ve never read one of his plays, Betrayal is my favorite and a great place to start.
