One year ago today I uploaded Frozen Grand Central to YouTube. The video went on to get over 15 million views (and a few million more if you count Vimeo, Revver, and College Humor). It was replicated by people in so many cities around the world that I stopped keeping track. I think the last count was 150+ cities in 50+ countries. It’s been co-opted by marketers, activists, and Law & Order SVU. It got me on The Today Show and ABC’s Nightline. It’s the main reason I’ve been invited to take a half-dozen trips to crazy places around the world in the past year. In short, those two minutes and sixteen seconds of flash video have had a pretty big impact on my life.
So it’s hilarious that today, on the one year anniversary, I get this email from someone named “James” via my contact form on Improv Everywhere:
“Why on earth would you think it’s necessary to make a bunch of communters [sic] wonder about something like all those “frozen” people? It’s ridiculous, and you people need to get a fuckin’ life. Quit wasting other people’s time with your absolutely stupid antics. I remember some losers in Junior High that used to try stupid crap like this to get other’s [sic] attention.”
