Nate Dern is making a documentary about the improv scene in New York. I really like this interview clip with my old friend Sean Hart. Sean gives an (admitted) cynical view of the value of dedicating all of your time to improv comedy and makes some excellent points. The time I’ve spent studying and performing improv over the past 11 years has led to some amazing things in my life (a wonderful wife! lifelong friends! inspiring creative collaborators! a place in an incredible community!), but I’m also happy that I’ve focused on making videos as well.

I think there is great value in being a part of the New York improv scene. Even if the work we do on stage is forgotten in a matter of hours, the training, experience, and personal creative connections we gain from being a part of a community are priceless. The trick is figuring out how to apply what improv has given you towards making something that can’t be so easily forgotten.

My recommendation for any 22-year-old moving to New York or Los Angeles to pursue comedy, theatre, or film will always be, “Sign up for level 1 at UCB.”

Last week I gave a workshop for the 99% conference, and I got the chance to pose for a Tintype photo thanks to the awesome people from San Francisco’s Photobooth. Tintypes were created in the 1850’s:

Tintype is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a sheet of iron metal that is blackened by painting, lacquering or enamelling and is used as a support for a collodion photographic emulsion.

Photographers usually worked outside at fairs, carnivals etc. and as the support of the tintype (there is no actual tin used) is resilient and does not need drying, photographs can be produced only a few minutes after the picture is taken.

In addition to getting a sheet of iron metal with your face on it, the company also takes a high-res digital photo of it and emails it to you.

The best part is everyone looks like either a coal miner or a Civil War soldier in a Tintype.

I was sad to hear of Dick Clark’s passing today. I know he’s more famous for Bandstand and New Year’s Rocking Eve, but I’ll always associate him with Pyramid, which is my favorite game show of all time. I used to watch the show in re-runs after school on USA growing up. I would put a post-it note on the TV so I could play along without knowing the word. Dick Clark hosted the show from 1973 to 1988. 15 years!

I’m seeing the reunited Pulp tonight and tomorrow night at Radio City. I’m so excited I don’t care if they play the exact same set both nights (though I hope they won’t!) This is their first time in the US since 1998. I think this is the last band I can check off my “high school obsessions” list. The Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, Pavement… it’s just ridiculous how many of my old favorites have reformed and played New Nork in the past eight years.

Since they added a second show, the scalping market tanked. There are tons of below face value tickets on Craigslist. It’s not too late!

Attention News Media: Please watch this and keep it in mind as you cover the Romney campaign. Just because it comes out of his mouth doesn’t mean you should broadcast it on the news without commentary. When someone lies, it is OK to point out the lie. Actually, it’s part of your job.

I know all politicians are dishonest, blah blah blah. But there is political spin and then there is just outright lying, and Mitt Romney is a LIAR. Or, if we give him the benefit of the doubt, he’s woefully misinformed and incurious to a degree that is simply not presidential. Honestly, it drives me crazy. I think it’s a big reason his likability numbers are so low. And I’d like to think it’s why he won’t be elected.

Improv Everywhere filled a New York park with eight sets of identical quadruplets, creating a surreal experience for anyone who happened to be walking through the park.

This mission is a sequel to our Human Mirror mission from 2008 where we had fifteen pairs of identical twins on the same subway car.
